How to choose the BEST traffic driving Key Words for SEO Content
85Choosing the RIGHT key words is essential in gaining traffic
If you want to be found by your target customers online, you must know how to optimize your website/Web Page and/or Blog. Step one to effective optimization begins before you even begin to place content on the page, it begins with your idea, brand, services, products and of course with you. As far as Huber’s go, if you want to be found on page one of search engines for your Hubs you can do one of two things. You can leave the rankings to chance and hope for the best, or you can learn how to research and gather key words, and then integrate them into the content of your webpage. Chance is for the lazy…research is for the successful…Let us all become successful!
SEO Tips- Misconceptions that kill your SEO
One common issue I have found with people who are attempting to optimize their content is; the misconception that they know how their target audience will or is going to find their online content. If you want to be successful with SEO, do yourself a favor and toss this idea out of your head. YOU DO NOT KNOW HOW PEOPLE ARE GOING TO SEARCH OR FIND WHAT YOU ARE TRYING TO PROMOTE, but you can, even if you are not a SEO Specialist.
You don't have to be an SEO Professional to use the Keyword Density Tool
Keyword Research, although it takes time, is among the most beneficial and critical elements of effective SEO, if it is done correctly and applied correctly. SEO Firms have various ways of conducting Keyword Research, this is the way that I have done for the SEO Company I had been with, and for the sites that I chose keywords for and then wrote content for, the proof was in their rankings as well as in the effectiveness of the content I wrote to capture the attention of the readers.
Your Keywords need to first and foremost be relevant to the content and to the purpose of the site. What this means is this;
If I was to create a website to promote Hair Salon Products, I would not try to optimize the content to rank for a search term like; Google Page Rank. Although Google Page Rank may have more searches than Dandruff Shampoo, it is not relevant to what I am doing in the first place. Optimizing your site for irrelevant search terms will hurt your rankings, traffic, and may even get you blacklisted for repeated offenses. Make sure your keywords as well as the content on your site is relevant as to what you are promoting.

How to conduct your keyword research... Let's Get Started...
First thing is first; if you do not know what Google Keyword Tool is this is the time to find out, because this hub is about using this extremely important tool to do your keyword research.
I am a visual person, and seeing examples up close and personal always seems to work best when you are attempting to teach the unknowing something that can and will benefit them now and in the future. For the sake of an example, I am going to be using my previous hub back linking for the SEO Clueless, to help guide you through this process. If you are ready, here we go; I will try to make this the least bit painful as possible.
Google Keyword Tool for Your Enjoyment
SEO Help Tool- How to use this SEO Tool.
Step #1- Go to Google Keyword Research Tool
You should see this layout (the example above), if you don't- you are not where you need to be. If you do, great... what I want you to do is start typing words that you BELIEVE, your target audience will search for in order to find your relevant content. Put as many as you would like, you will be asked to type in letters as they appear (to ensure you are human). After you do so, select ENTER… This is along the lines as to what you should see, congruent to your content of course (the example below).
A list that will be generated that you can look through and choose from
Narrow Down Your Choice Search Terms
Step #2-
Now that you have them all checked off, go back to the top of your search term results and select ‘VIEW AS TEXT’. When this appears, click inside of the box and CTRL ‘A’ and then CTRL ‘C’…and now close the dialog box.
Go Back up to the top of the webpage, where you initially typed all those 'IDEA-SEARCH TERMS', CTRL A and now CTRL V to Paste your new selections into the Tool.
Now, on the left side of the screen you should see some options to pin down your results. The default of the Search Tool will automatically select BROAD for you, which it should be the first run through. But now you want to deselect BROAD and Select EXACT and Search the new set of terms under this setting. You may be surprised; your terms may have changed in significance, as well as there may be some additional terms you did not have before. The Terms which appear will now have BRACKETS around them. (This is how you know these are the EXACT results).
Scroll back through the list of results and select the most relevant terms. Pay attention to the GLOBAL monthly searches as well as the COMPETITION on the terms. It will be harder to be found for something with HIGH competition, especially if there are hundreds of thousands of monthly searches. If you see a search term with low competition and high searches for your subject that is an optimal key search term to include. Do not worry about the local traffic. Local traffic and hub pages is not as relevant as the global searches, being that most of the content on Hub Pages is generalized and idea driven, not businesses and product driven to a specific geographical location.
Select Your Final Choices for Search Terms
Now that you have picked through the results and checked off the desired terms (try to keep your list narrowed to about 1 key word per 150 words- or 10 key words max (when you are writing your content you will want to place these terms (at least twice per term) within the content/ headers/ captions and so on...if you have too many you can get pegged as spam, the content will sound repetitive and un-natural, and the readers may view the content as Key Word Stuffed, as well as harm the relevance to the content itself).
Return to the top of the results box and once again select, view as text and CTRL A, and then CTRL C’…now close the dialog box.
Let's Wrap this Up and Package it with a Bow
We are almost done. Under the Tools Menu on the left hand side of the Screen, select Traffic Estimator. CTRL V your search terms into the Word or Phrases Tool/Box, type in $100 for the Max CPC and leave the Daily Budget, blank. You will need to confirm that you are human again. Your terms will fill into the data sheet where you can now organize them according to the searches or the Estimated CPC (Cost Per Click). The cost per click is another way to determine the significance of the terms you are using.
That is all...FOR NOW... I always like to return back to the Google Keyword Search Tool after I have completed my content and published. I got into this habit as a SEO Copywriter and it helped me see what I was doing right and what I was doing wrong. I usually wait a day or two before I come back to the tool and instead of typing in 'Ideas', I simply place the URL to my hub or content into the designated dialog box, confirm I am human, and allow the program to crawl my site and see what I have. Perhaps there is a search term, I didn't consider the first time around, that i want to integrate into the hubs content, or perhaps I will find that I am on Target, regardless...double checking a few days later is always a good idea.
As always, thanks for coming to read my hub. I hope that you can take some of this SEO Help and SEO Tips and put them to good use to build up your online content. If you have any feedback or any question on how to use the Keyword Density Tool that I did not answer, please leave it below in the comments section. Google Adwords Keyword Tool Terms- Competition and CPC Explained
Another Quick SEO Tip while using the Keyword Density Checker
After a comment on this hub enticed me to explain the relevance of CPC and Competition when using Google Adwords Tools, I decided to give it a bit of an explanation within the hub, as I am aware that many do not read through all the comments and responses.
A quick explanation of what 'Competition' is in relation to Adwords is; a generalized idea of how MANY advertisers are bidding on a particular search term. The CPC of a search term has little to do with the competition of a term, but more so relevance and quality of the search term. The below two Snip-its show this. The first is organized by competition and the second by CPC.
As a final tip to using Google Adwords Keyword Tool (Keyword Density Tool) to help select relevant keyword for your content, let me say that you should NOT base your selection off of one of these factors alone. This tool allows you to see what your target audience is searching for, so you are not aiming in the dark and hoping for the best. Consider the options available by considering the competition, the number of searches, and the relevance and significance of your content to the search term you are optimizing for.
For further explanation as to CPC and Competition, please review the comments below, and feel free to ask any questions you may have as to what, how or say that in English one more time concerns which may pop up when getting a feel for this SEO madness.

Very useful hub specially for the ones who are writing online, for instance on the hubpages.
Great info explained well. I'm a visual person too so I appreciated your visuals. Voted up!
Wow, very informative, thanks so much, I will be using this now.
This is really good. Finding that great keyword which is both highly searched and still doesn't have too tough of competition can sometimes be a daunting task. You provided some great info. Enjoy your weekend!
The Competition column indicates how much money advertisers are paying for that keyword. It's not always directly correlated to how many sites have that keyword.
I agree. A relatively high competition score probably means a relatively high cost.
I think we are on different pages. Competition for a keyword usually implies higher bids on that keyword, but that is also a function of the click-through rate of the landing page, the conversion rate on the landing page, the number of bidders in the market (competition) and also the margins on whatever is being sold.
Good writeup on How to choose the BEST traffic driving Key Words for SEO Content.
Very useful hub, thanks for sharing this.
Great job HC - very informative and helpful (voted up and useful)
I'm going to bookmark and tweet this one.
Also, thank you for writing and researching, I can tell this took some time, thought and organization - well done
I am an SEO rookie and have been confused by many explanations of SEO keyword search. This is the first SIMPLE explanation that INCLUDED screen shots. Thanks so much!
Choosing and using the right keywords is something that I am still trying to get a handle on. I find that your hub about 'How to choose the BEST traffic driving Key Words for SEO Content' to be very helpful in giving me a better clue how I can better utilize keywords. I do use Google's Keyword Tool, but your hub gives me a better understanding on what I need to do with it. Thanks for the info.
Thank you for this hub. I have tried using the keyword tool, but I really had no idea what I was doing and just hoped for the best. This does make it a lot clearer.
Very glad to include a link to this hub in my latest hub - Grab That Traffic!
You ROCK H.C Porter - thank you for sharing your knowledge!
I think this is probably the most helpful article I've seen on this subject. Bookmarked and sharing...
Now I know what to type in as MAX CPC! I thought $10 would do it but it was only my crazy no-ground guess! Can I ask why is $100 THE number?
I really like the lines "..you should NOT base your selection off of one of these factors alone. This tool allows you to see what your target audience is searching for, so you are not aiming in the dark.."
As important as the keyword tool is for online writers and publishers, we must all actively understand that no amount of keyword research can beat well written and unique content.
I think this hub should be a must read for all new hubbers who want to go through a very straight forward explanation of how the keyword too works and what to look out for. Nicely done and definitely voted up!

Thank you for this, it is extremely useful to beginner SEO types like me! Following you, and voted up!
H.C, thank you so much for this excellent hub--as a newcomer, everything about SEO is like a foreign language to me, and you've helped me to understand some of it. One question: is the CPC the cost to me, or to the advertiser, or have I completely failed to understand it? Do I want a high CPC or a low one?
Good info here but maybe a good place to get a couple questions answered as well... I'm new to this so I appreciate your patience. First, how do I get the bar graph to show up in Adwords? I only see the rating for LOW, MED, HIGH but I would like to see the bar graph for more detailed breakdown. Second, if you are choosing a keyword with low competition (of course) and high searches, won't it be that much more difficult to get your website rated #1 under this keyword? In other words, even though competition is low here, the number one position is well established whereas if you get #1 in a lower searched word won't that be better? Thanks for your help!
the higher the number of searches then the level of competition is more stringent
for someone who has the ability to seo a little like me, I seem a little inconvenience
thanks for this useful article
I am going to use this information on my next hub on fitness. Typically, I like to instinctively select my title but every now and then I actually play by the rules :) thanks and cheers
Thanks for explaining this. I'm going to let it sink in and review it again tomorrow. Thanks again. Take care, Kelley
ok I followed these steps here...started with fitness and found through the steps presented here that physical fitness was my best choice...thanks and cheers...
