I am not Cinderella, and I am not searching for a sterling crown
I never wanted to be Cinderella
Although I have prayed for a Fairy God Mother
I have never had or even seen a glass slipper
Nor do I have experience dealing with an evil step sister
I don’t need to find myself a night in shining armor
A man who treats me with respect, is a man I would honor
There is no need to make a wish
Or find a ball gown
I am not Cinderella
And I am not searching for a sterling crown
I only wanted to be seen for everything inside of me
I thought that I could meet someone
That knew that I was his and he was my one true love
I wasn’t ever expecting to be swept off my feet
Most days I was happy when someone actually remembered me
I drifted in and out
And there have been times when I have fallen apart
But eventually I got to myself and was able to feel my heart
I don’t need Prince Charming
Or a man to hold my hand
I don’t need for anyone to stand by me
For me to know who I am
I don’t depend on you
If you want to know the truth
I will still be me
Even if you are no longer you
It may not be easy
If I decided to live life alone
But then I could rest assured
That what I earned was what I owned
If I closed my eyes and I really tried
I am sure I can see you as being my life
But what about me and the dreams that I dream
Why do I have to give up all I believe
You always said you would rescue me
But I have no dragon for you to defeat
Only the demons of my past
And I don’t dance at balls
Without the illusion of a mask
I don’t need to be Cinderella
Or to live in a fairy tale
To have a happily ever after
It will be my hopes and dreams I will share
I may not have a horse drawn carriage
Or experience the perfect story book marriage
But what I’ve learned is what I know
You must have Truth, Faith and Understanding-for a love to grow
No stupid jokes
No magic potions
No promises told
That will soon be forgotten
Cinderella can keep her Prince Charming
And the perfect charmed life
When I come across my happily ever after
It will be shared with someone who sees what is inside

Very well said! It would be so tiring to have to get into situations all the time that require being rescued just to maintain the status quo and fairy godmothers are highly overrated. I especially enjoyed "I don’t need for anyone to stand by me, For me to know who I am".

Thanks- that was the first line of the entire poem I wrote and based the rest around, that and I never wanted to be Cinderella :) it surprises me that so many women in this day and age are still searching or waiting for someone to rescue them, rather deciding that they are capable of rescuing themselves.

Most of us women are very simple in what we want in a man. I agree with you, we don't want to be Cinderella, we just want a man that is going to be loyal, kind, loving, and who will except us for all our perfections and imperfections.
