Look me in the eyes before you tell me what you see

Look me in the eyes,

Before you tell me what you see.

Can you see my memories,

And the times I’ve been made to bleed?

Can you hear the hurt,

I have buried deep inside?

A pain I can’t forget,

But one I refuse to let determine my life.

Do you feel the confusion,

The loss of control,

The transformation of an illusion,

Created from within my soul?

I keep hold of time,

And don’t let it hold me back.

But as I try to focus on time,

I am made to realize all that I still lack.

The anger is taken by acceptance,

The acceptance turns to peace,

And when the world becomes clear,

I can then begin to see.

Living and Breathing,

A little past due.

But better late than never

As I am determining my truth

If you don’t want to understand

I don’t understand why not

It is the world which we live in

What we have is all we got

I allow my eyes to become heavy,

No longer forcing them open at night,

Now I can finally dream,

As long as I continue to fight.

So tell me now,

As you look into my eyes,

Who do you think I am,

Under my disguise?

Beautiful. They say the eyes are the window to our soul. You described it beautifully.

Behind those eyes is a wonderfully beautiful woman who desires the loving attention she craves, while maintaining her inner child, which allows her to endure the indifference in the world around her and have a solidly based family of respect, that only brings happiness and love to the forefront. Your words, as always, are excellent. Thumbs up! :)

Wonderfully written, it is too bad the journey always entails a battle...gotta fight. Again, a beautiful poem about the journey--not the destination.

Thanks, HC.

Lovely poem that tells of the journey. I see your eyes as open, giving, thoughtful and candid, and do not miss very much, which is reflected in your writing. And I can't say that about very many people. :)

When greeting someone is Africa they say, "I see you" instead our Hello. It is way to validate each other. I think so many times we pretend to see someone but aren't really looking at them at all. Looking into the eyes and into their soul. cudos.

Golfgal tells an interesting tale that North Americans could learn from. Look into the eyes and quit reading the fine print--liars are liars and truth of the soul will set you free.

It seems you are asking a question that is very hard to answer. I hope this pain and confusion is only in the poem.

Very lovely poem to read. lol

I enjoyed this H.C.; you've touched on something universal here. I went looking for a quote but couldn't find it. Something about suspending judgement for we can not know the pain another carries inside. Well done.

Ghaelach,

Thanks for the comment and for reading. In regard to the comment about confusion, in contrary, this poem is not about confusion...but more so the transformation or realization of who you are and how your past effects your life. We each have a say as to if we are happy or sad...some blame life events on their unhappiness... I have... but have come to realize- it doesnt have to be that way... So my happiness is now stemmed from what I hold in my soul, who I believe to be and what I aim to accomplish in my life. My past and the hurt is all still there...it is apart of who I am-but it is not the deciding factor as to how I will live my life. Hope that clears up any confusion as to what the meaning of this poem is/was...

Love this poem H.C Porter. Sometimes you can take things from the 'demons' or experiences throughout your life and it can be up to the individual whether to use them for a positive or negative feeling. Also, the pictures you use here are really good.

Ghaelach, LOL... No big deal-the great thing about poetry is that the writer can write something that is a reflection of who they are or what they are feeling and the reader can utilize the poem in whatever way, shape or form they feel they can relate to it by. I understand that not every reader will pull the same information from a series of words that I do when I write them, and I do not take offense to different interpretations...No worries, just glad that people are incline to even read my work, regardless of the interpretation :) Thanks again for taking your time to read and to comment :)

Hi Holly, I have always been fascinated by the biblical "royal disease" of leprosy visited upon some more rebellious Old Testament kings. Those who do not learn from the pain of past experiences were given a chance to experience life with no pain--with nothing to gauge our excesses or missteps, the leper was often damaged beyond repair. It is nice to read your journeys that demonstrate you learn and appreciate how it helps you decide the positive path. Thanks for the look. =:)

Rafini- Thank you! I have no idea why so many of us choose to hide, rather than be seen...Suppose that we dont want to give anyone a chance to see us, so they will not have the opportunity to hurt us.

Beatiful reminder that all is not as it would seem at times. As well as, hard to know someone without having walked the life they have lead that brought them to the moments they share with you. _Paul
