The Worst Mass Killing on a US Military Base in History
My beloved state of Texas made the news Thursday November 5, 2009, but for no reason that anyone would ever want to say. Thirteen people were shot and killed while thirty more were wounded when Fort Hood physiatrist, U.S. Army Major Nadal Malik Hasan opened fire Thursday November 5th. The shooting is said to be the worst mass killing on a U.S. military base. As people begin to reflect on the lives that were lost yesterday, questions about the man responsible begin to rise. Who was he? What happened? Was this a planned act? Could it have been stopped?
Neighbors of 39 year old Major Nadal Malik Hasan-say that he had cleared out his apartment before the assault? Perhaps it was something that was premeditated-did a good yet troubled doctor snap? His job was to council soldiers as they were being deployed to Iraq, it has been noted that he has had to seek council himself for having difficulties dealing with what some of the soldiers. He arrived in Fort Hood this past July, worked the previous six years at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center, first as an intern-then a resident and last year a fellow in disaster and preventive psychiatry. He was educated and received his Degree in Medicine in 2001 from the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, Md. Most would say he kept to himself-but was of kind and loving nature. I suppose to the families that are grieving the loss of their loved ones, his kind and loving nature, matters none. Hasan is in a coma, after being shot four times. If he recovers or if he dies-will we ever really have answers that can explain why such a horrific attack from within one of our nation’s army bases happened in the first place? Perhaps we already have the answers and need to put the pieces together. Of course nothing can be said to the media to help us understand the doctor’s attack, while an investigation ongoing, but the pieces that I’ve read point in the direction that the doctor may have done this attack just as suicide bombers attack, with the view that you sacrifice yourself for the cause. He had told a former classmate that he viewed the, War on Terrorism as the War on Iraq. Hasan hoped that president Obama would begin pulling troops out of Afghanistan. Another said that after the attack on our nation known as 9-11, Hansan has received much ridicule for his Muslim beliefs. Perhaps his family’s roots in Pakistan were deeper than he let be known.
34 year old Sgt Kimberly Munley- is being credited for ending the doctor’s rampage-which has been described as very calm and deliberate. He took his time-shooting many of his victims more than once. With her heroic act comes consequence, Sgt Munley is resting in a hospital now, for she is among the 30 wounded in this horrific attack. Thank you- Sgt Kimberly Munley, prayers go out to you for a speedy, full recovery -God only knows how many lives you saved.
As Fort Hood-As Texas-As the Nation waits for reasons- we mourn the loss of heroes. Pray for their families- Pray for their Souls, the thirteen individuals who lost their lives during the worst mass killing on a US Military base, in Fort Hood Texas on November 5, 2009.

A terrible tragedy, we lost one of our home, (an Oklahoman). His name escapes me at the moment.
A sobering moment in hearing about that. My thoughts are with the ones who were affected. Franki
Thanks for the insight and thoughfulness for the families who have suffered.
Wow what a potent set of words you've expressed here. I can feel your conviction H.C. Thanks for shedding a little more light on what's going on in down there. Ben
My understanding is that he cleared out his apartment because he was about to be deployed overseas. I've read that this behavior is normal and expected for soldiers in that position. Obviously he was a terrorist and had ulterior motives, but giving his stuff away would probably not have been a red flag.
