Sexy, Sassy, Chic-Women's Work Attire

By

What does well dressed look like?

Business Suits are always a great choice for an interview.
Business Suits are always a great choice for an interview.
And with the great styles and cuts available, you can still look chic and like a woman.
And with the great styles and cuts available, you can still look chic and like a woman.

A woman's work clothes should dress her for the job she wants, not the one she has.

With unemployment still high and many people competing for the jobs that are available, it is important that you stand out among the other applicants. Here are a few ways that a person stands out during the interview process.

#1 With a great resume, which is well organized, easy to read and gives a brief overview of your education, objective, experience and skills.

#2 Your personality. An employer does not want to hire an employee that has a flat, bland personality. They want to hire a person that has the attitude that says, team player, go getter, hard working and intelligent.

#3 Your appearance. Stand out amongst the competition with a stylish, well organized, energetic look, which fits your personality. If you enter an interview appearing as though you fell out of bed and threw on the business suit your mother wore in 1985, which was stashed at the bottom of your closet, how can an employer believe that you are full of fresh new ideas and ready to improve the productivity and success of the company you are applying with?

With a great resume, a dedicated yet upbeat personality as well as a stylish, sophisticated, well put together ensemble, you have much better odds of looking like a diamond in the ruff, rather than a dime a dozen.

How to buy your work clothes to fit you and your budget

Once you have the job, you want to continue to look as well kept as you appeared to be during the interview. Looking nice doesn't have to cost you a weeks paycheck per outfit. With Discount Outlets, Online Stores, Sales and a creative eye. You can easily come up with a great look on a budget.

Many people often think that they have to buy everything all at once. Some times this is a good idea specially when you are looking for a suit. Other times, you may see a great dress, that is appropriate for work, but you don't have the right shoes, or maybe the dress would require a blazer to be work appropriate. The same dress would also be a well suitable choice for after work, when you meet the girls or your husband for dinner or drinks (minus the jacket).

If it is a dress that you are drawn to, but shy away from, because it is not a 'complete-finished' look- buy it. You probably have a cardigan or blazer somewhere in your closet to complete the ensemble .

As for shoes, if you really don't have a suitable pair to match, you now have the perfect excuse to search for and purchase a new pair of shoes. (If you did not know already, shoes can make or break an outfit).

Expand the possibilities of an outfit, by mixing the old with the new.

No matter the outfit you are wearing, you must carry yourself well, your confidence is truly what completes your look-not the suit itself. You can wear a $1,000 suit, and still appear to be lost and sloppy if you are not standing tall.

People (especially women), tend to stand taller when they feel as if they look nice. We will smile as we walk into a room with our head held up and eyes looking forward, rather than enter a room, avoiding eye contact as we watch our feet take each step. This is precisely why it is important that you are comfortable in what you wear. Buy something you like, that fits your personality and not just your body shape and size.

Suits are always a great choice, they are a natural no brainer type of outfit because it is already pre-matched and ready to go. Just don't forget; just because it came together, does not mean it must stay together, mix and match for an endless array of ideas and looks.

You can buy a skirt suit and a pant suit and mix and match the new pieces with things you already have in your closet and make a variety of new looks that you can show off and look appropriate in. This is a great thing to do, especially when shopping on a budget.

As long as you stay with pieces that were designed and sold within the past 5-10 years, you should be okay when scrimmaging through your closet. If you get the urge to put on a style that was made popular by the movie 'Working Girl', resist and donate it-or at least put it away in your keep sake box with your other memories.

If it is Dry Clean Only, the cost for the outfit continues after the purchase

Look great, feel comfortable-
Look great, feel comfortable-
But don't spend a fortune cleaning your work clothes.
But don't spend a fortune cleaning your work clothes.

Consider what you're dealing with before you buy

One thing you may want to be aware of when looking for new work clothing is how to care for your new clothes. If you barely have time to eat-you may not want to purchase an item that is Dry Clean Only.

Another helpful tip is when you are buying a suit, feel the fabric. Will you feel itchy from the time you put it on, until you get it back off?

If you feel even the slightest bit of discomfort whether it be itchy from the fabric or it is just a little too tight around the chest, consider passing on the outfit and continue searching for something else. Being uncomfortable in your clothing, will start you off on the wrong foot each time you put it on.

Also, before you buy that beautiful suit, scrunch the fabric up in your hands and hold it tight for a minute. When you release the fabric check to see if it returned to it's original beautiful form or if it held the wrinkles from being scrunched up.

If it doesn't release the wrinkles consider this, every time you sit, fold your arms or cross your legs-your outfit will hold the wrinkles that naturally happen when doing these things.

You can't really walk around with an iron to ensure you always look great- save yourself the hassle of dealing with these fabrics, and find something that isn't going to remember every move you make throughout the day.

Dressing for success doesn't have to be a headache, or cost you a fortune (each one of the pieces I chose to show here, are all under $100, and only one of them was over $75).

I love dressing up! You did a good job on addressing this subject. I remember on the news last year hearing about the trouble some companies were having with their employees, namely the females, dressing too casual. Wearing jeans and flip flops to a 6 figure high rise building job is more than tacky!

Good job, H.C...and great selection.

Thank you Ann for being the first to comment on this one. Yeah, a lot of ladies where too short of skirts or too low of tops- they dont get the point of SEXY not SLEAZY. I love finding something that I feel I look nice in, it puts me in a better mood to start the day off :)

Another intresting topic:)i love to dress-up but try to spend sensibly, consider my comfort while selecting clothes for work, and i like people who dress-up really well and got style. How you carry your clothes matter alot, style is an expression of individualism and also reveals the inner feelings. So to feel good,i try to look good:)and love to dress-up in morning for work.

i enjoyed the hub,Cheers,Nadia

Great hub. There's no reason why women can't look sassy and stylish in the work place.

That's one thing I miss, working from home. Getting dressed for work. Taking more care of my appearance.

Mike Lickteig 2 years ago

You offer some great advice on how to dress in the workplace. This should especially be read by younger folks in their first job, or just looking for their first job. Many have no idea how their choice of clothing influences how they are perceived. There are scores of folks applying for jobs dressed poorly because they believe the work doesn't require nicer attire. In making that assumption, they ignore what their attire says about their self-esteem, their ambition, and the way they relate with others.

Thanks for sharing, and your hub should be required reading for anyone about to enter or re-enter the work force.

fionna, Thanks for stopping by. I agree-take your personality with you to work, dont leave it at home with the clothes you enjoy wearing :)

Very nicely written and presented Hub H.C. I liked the different clothing, not that I have any need for them. I know where to direct other people, should I run into people who need attire for work. Thank you. :)

Thanks Crazdriter for leaving a comment-glad you liked the clothes. I wore band tees and flannel shirts for until I was 20... but had to learn how to appear more professional for work, thought the tips may be somewhat useful to some flannel wearing non-girly girls that must adapt, lol

fab information. the only issue I have is the use of all slim models. A few curvy women would have balanced it up more beautifully.

beingbbw,

Thanks for the suggestion, perhaps including various shapes and sizes of the female body would have helped promote the best way to dress and how to aim to appear, for more women.

Awesome hub! Definitely lots to think about when purchasing work attire. I absolutely LOVE my pencil skirts...something about them always makes me feel saavy!

H.C Porter 7 months ago

tattookitty,

thanks for the feedback! Glad you liked it. I too love the pencil skirts, I think at last count I have about 6 of them in various shades, all slightly different variations of the same skirt :) The pencil skirt is always apart of my Power Suit :)

Brittney 4 months ago

Hello, where can I find these outfits for the low prices that you speak about??

H.C Porter 3 months ago

Brittney, I would start looking on Amazon first- you can find some great deals- there are a few Amazon ads in the hub which are displaying some outfits you can click on. You can also try Metrostyle- they have some cutes stuff for decent pricing too :)
